The first tables were a plate which the person put to himself on knees, then tables on legs appeared. In all centuries the table was the center indoors, and the Russian name came from the word "stlat", i.e. to dim. Tables were working, lunch. Already at the time of Hippocrates there were operating tables (in the treatise "About Joints" he describes the equipment and tools for operations where also the operating table is mentioned). Since the 16th century operating tables became wooden, on four legs with obligatory convenient approach from all directions. Then there were nickelized metal tables, however, to change position of the patient on the operating table, an opportunity was not. The first functional operating tables allowed to change an inclination of all table for convenience of the doctor, then on tables there were sections which arranged this or that part of a body under operation. The first functional table was shown by the German surgeon Adalbert Tobold in 1827.
Modern multipurpose operating tables have a similar design, but in principle, all of them are same: supplementary equipments are located on the basis with mechanical mobile sections. Big clinics equip the operating rooms with specialized surgical tables for various profile operations. It is clear, that gynecologic and cosmetology operations differ therefore also the equipment will have various functionality.
Small surgical hospitals are, as a rule, equipped with multipurpose all-surgical operating tables which have a possibility of transformation in special by means of addition of sections and change of mobile sections of a table. Adjustment of mobile sections can be mechanical (by means of the foot pump a hydraulic part of a table), or by means of the electric drive (pressing of buttons on the panel is regulated).
On the same type also the dressing table is arranged. It is used for performance of bandagings and also inspections and simple surgeries. The dressing table reminds a couch at which a head part and height is regulated. Existence of castors on table legs is possible.

The table operational universal mechanical Stern OT-5 is intended for laying and fixing of the patient in situation the most convenient for access to bodies and to body parts when carrying out surgeries. The panel of a table is manufactured from X-ray - transparent materials. The design of a table provides a possibility of input of cartridges with a x-ray film. There is an antidecubital mattress. The wide range of additional functions of this table gives the chance to perform operations in any field of surgery. All buttons and contacts are equipped with drip-proof surfaces.
